Winter Warmer Pea and Ham Soup

It’s that time of year when the nights are getting colder and motivation to cook is become more difficult. We are trying to balance the need for some warm comfort food as well as keeping to a healthy diet. I really love soups and home made is even better so why  not try my favourite winter warmer Pea and Ham Soup.  A quick note before you read any of my recipes, I don’t stick to a recipe well. I usually don’t have exact measurements so I will give you a guide. I also add a bit of this and that or whatever might be in the fridge or cupboard. Don’t be shy to experiment with flavours.  RECIPE Ingredients:

  • 1 Ham hock
  • 250g of Split Peas / Soup Mix
  • Onion
  • Capsicum
  • Swede
  • Parsnip
  • Potato
  • Carrots
  • Celery
  • Season with veggie stock, salt and pepper

Method: 1. Place ham hock and 250g of Soup Mix into a large pot and cover with water. Bring to the boil. 2. Turn temperature down to half way and continue to simmer for up to 60 mins. 3. Dice all veggies and add to pot. Return to the boil and turn back to half way.4. Add seasoning of veggie stock, salt and pepper if needed.5. Let all ingredients simmer until soft and ham meat falling from the bone. The split peas should also be soft.6. Serve on it’s own or with a wholemeal bread roll. Cheats: Over the years I have discovered a few cheats when you are running short on time. This soup is best made on a Sunday afternoon when you have time to let it cook while you wander around the house. But if you want to cook in a short time, try these cheats.

  • Ham hock meat – Coles now sell ham hock meat already cooked and taken from the bone. It tastes great and cuts down the cooking time required.
  • Mushy Peas – A little trick my dad used once is to replace the split peas with a tin of mushy peas. It gives it the same thick consistency but cuts the cooking time down dramatically.
  • Soup Packs – Who even knows what a ‘Swede’ is? Well I would never hunt one out but most supermarkets and Fruit & Veg stores sell the Soup Pack which include all of the popular veggies for soups. I have listed the usual ingredients above but feel free to add whatever veggies you enjoy.
